The tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is a long-living tropical evergreen tree belonging to the pea family, Fabaceae. Reaching heights up to 25–30 meters, it produces edible, pod-like legumes containing a sticky, sweet-and-sour pulp widely used in global cuisine and traditional medicine.
Tree Characteristics
Height: Grows up to 24–30 meters tall with a dense, spreading canopy.
Leaves: Feathery, alternate, and evenly pinnately compound with small, oval leaflets.
Flowers: Small, pale yellow with pink or red streaks, grouped in tiny clusters.
Bark: Rough, dark gray or brown, and deeply fissured.
Fruit and Seeds
Pods: Curved, brown, indehiscent legumes measuring 7.5 to 24 cm long.
Pulp: Sticky, fleshy, and brown-to-reddish, shifting from tart to sweet as it matures.
Seeds: 1 to 12 flat, shiny, dark brown seeds embedded inside the pulp.
Growth and Uses
Climate: Thrives in full sun and warm tropical or subtropical areas; highly sensitive to frost.
Hardiness: Highly resistant to drought, wind, and coastal salt.
Uses: Pulp is used in cooking and drinks; wood is used for carpentry and tools.
